Pastoral Care
We believe that it is essential that we, as Christians, love and support one another and care especially for those with specific needs. Life Groups, organisations and friendship groups provide a core caring service within our church. Praying for one another, supporting and encouraging one another at times of pressure, for example, sharing a rota to provide meals at times of sickness.
The impact of “lockdown” itself has highlighted the need for an effective care and support system within our church. Instances of loneliness and isolation have emphasised the need to regularly check in with friends if they seem to be struggling.
In addition to the many forms of care that are practiced within the whole church, a focussed “Carers Group” meet once a month under the leadership of the Senior Minister to think and pray about those with particular long or short term needs and devise the most effective way of providing care. Visits and phone calls are made to those who have been bereaved or are sick at home or in hospital. We also take communion to those who are long-term shut-in.
During the recent months of lockdown these “Carers Group” meetings have been conducted on Zoom. We have made many phone calls and on some occasions made doorstep visits, shopped for food and other necessities and helped people to reach hospital and doctors’ appointments.
Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you!”
Luncheon Club
The church’s care ministry has included a Luncheon Club for senior citizens for almost 40 years. Traditionally between 60-80 senior citizens have gathered on church premises once a week to enjoy a three course meal, friendship and ministry. An annual holiday and days out have also been a regular feature.
Because of Covid restrictions, meeting together has not been possible since spring 2020. In the meantime, the Luncheon Club team have stayed in touch with each member by telephone on a regular basis providing care, friendship and occasional practical support. We have sent our members birthday and Christmas cards and delivered flowers or plants for special birthdays. We intend to send Easter cards to each member, too. Although the majority of members have remained strong and well, three of our long-standing members have sadly died during this time of lockdown. Some have struggled with the isolation and loneliness.
The Luncheon Club staff team are currently considering how to continue to care and support our senior citizens in the coming months.
Whether that be “back to normal” or a new format, we remain committed to providing friendship, support and ministry in Jesus’ name.
